Kwazulu-Natal – A primary school educator found herself in the unfortunate position of being scammed after a chiseller who identified himself as a medical doctor robbed her of her laptop and cell phone.
According to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), she met the man in October 2022 while shopping in Ballito, KZN.
“They struck up a conversation during which he identified himself as a medical Doctor. They exchanged contact details and chatted on WhatsApp since.
“During their conversations, he informed her that he was in search of a part-time employee. The work from home position entailed data capturing and only required the applicant to own their own laptop and cellphone,” RUSA said in a statement on Facebook.
After showing interest in the offer, she agreed to meet with him in a parking lot near a private hospital in Ballito.
“During their meeting, he informed her that he would require her laptop and cellphone to register a Google account.
“She handed it over to him and witnessed him enter the hospital. After waiting more than 20 minutes, the victim went in search of the doctor without success,” RUSA said.
The teacher has reportedly shared the incident on social media and has allegedly been contacted by other individuals who were robbed by a man using the same modus tactics.
According to RUSA, the victims have not registered criminal cases. The suspect was described as “a smooth talker with strikingly good looks”.
