Parktown – South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed the arrest of a suspect who was recorded assaulting a police officer on a viral video following a confrontation during a routine patrol on Tuesday.
The video has since circulated on social media.
Former Mayor of Johannesburg Herman Mashaba shared the video and commented on the incident – “We are in trouble,” he wrote.
“I am beyond shocked. This is what has happened of South African law enforcement agencies. I am sure we all know the cause. These are the direct results of a Nation governed by a compromised leadership,” Mashaba said.

SAPS spokesperson, Brigadier Brenda Muridili, said in a statement that the suspect was arrested later in the evening.
“It is reported that two members on routine patrol came across about five people drinking in public. When the police warned them about public drinking, one of the men turned on the male police officer.
“The suspect then fled the scene. Back-up was called and the suspect was arrested later in the evening.”
According to Muridili, the suspect has been charged with assaulting a police officer and he will appear before the Springs Magistrates Court on Thursday, December 22.
