Cape Town – Police in KwaZulu-Natal arrested a man at a Durban shopping mall for his alleged involvement in seven murders and one attempted murder in Umlazi Q Section, south of Durban.
The arrest was made by a multi-disciplinary team from various police units based on operationalised intelligence and leads.
“The 72-hour mobilization of maximum resources which was activated shortly after seven people were shot and fatally wounded at Q Section in Umlazi over the weekend yielded positive results when one suspect was nabbed on Sunday, 13 August 2023. Updated reports indicate that seven people were fatally wounded and one is still hospitalised.
“A multi-disciplinary team comprising officers from the Serious and Violent Crimes Murder and Robbery Unit, Provincial Stabilisation Team, Phoenix Trio Task Team and Crime Intelligence, operationalised intelligence and followed leads in Umbumbulu, Umlazi, Empandwini and Pitela areas,” police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said.
The man is scheduled to appear in the Umlazi Magistrate’s Court and will face seven charges of murder and one of attempted murder.
One injured person is in the hospital, and the police are still searching for at least three other suspects connected to the incidents.
