Cape Town – A 29-year-old suspect has reportedly been arrested by the police in connection with the murder of Marolien Schmidt, a popular physiotherapist in Gqeberha.
Schmidt, known for her caring nature and passion for life, was fatally stabbed in her own home on Women’s Day.
Ward Councillor Terri Stander revealed on Facebook that the suspect had been apprehended. Security camera footage played a crucial role in identifying the suspect.
“I am very excited to report that a suspect has been arrested for the murder of our beloved Marolien Schmidt.
The arrest took place in Central during the early hours of Thursday, Radio station Algoa FM quoted police spokesperson Capt Sandra Janse van Rensburg as saying.
Schmidt, an Ironman athlete, had recently celebrated her 40th birthday and was remembered fondly by friends and neighbours who held a candlelight vigil in her honour.
She was stabbed multiple times in her home and succumbed to her injuries despite being rushed to the hospital by neighbours.
Schmidt had received her education from Hoër Volkskool in Graaff-Reinet and graduated from Stellenbosch University in 2005.
