Cape Town – A 21-year-old woman, Andiswa Bayi, was arrested and appeared in court in Kimberley, Northern Cape, on Monday on charges of kidnapping.
The incident occurred when a newborn baby girl went missing from the maternity ward of Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe Hospital on September 6, 2023.
“The baby went missing on September 6, 2023, at about 5pm and the suspect was arrested for man stealing (kidnapping) on September 8, 2023, in Greenpoint in Kimberley,” IOL quoted Northern Cape police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Sergio Kock as saying.
The infant was found unharmed.
“The infant and some of her clothes were recovered at the home of the female suspect in Greenpoint in Kimberley.
“The baby was unharmed and underwent medical observation before being reunited with her parents,” said Kock, according to Times Live.
The case has been postponed to September 19 for a formal bail application.
