Cape Town – Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen has pledged to improve working conditions for animal health practitioners in South Africa amid a critical shortage of professionals that threatens animal health, biosecurity, and food security.
Steenhuisen highlighted the challenges faced by veterinarians, including insufficient resources, inadequate pay, and mental health concerns.
He stressed their vital role in safeguarding the agricultural sector.
“Veterinarians are a cornerstone of South Africa’s agricultural success, and without addressing the systemic issues they face, we risk jeopardising not only their well-being but the nation’s food security,” said Steenhuisen.
South Africa currently has only 4,000 registered veterinarians, below international standards, with about 100 leaving the country annually for better opportunities abroad.
Steenhuisen plans to meet with provincial agriculture MECs, the South African Veterinary Association, and industry experts to address these issues and prevent a crisis in the profession and the broader agricultural sector.
