Cape Town – The state has confirmed its readiness for trial in the case of escaped convicted murderer and rapist Thabo Bester, despite previously requesting a postponement from February to July.
Bester faces a charge of escaping from prison, while his co-accused, including his girlfriend Nandipha Magudumana, face multiple charges, including corruption, aiding an escape, and defeating the ends of justice.
According to SABC, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said it has gathered comprehensive evidence and emphasised its commitment to ensuring justice in this high-profile case.
“The state has gathered comprehensive evidence and is ready to present its case before the court. We respect the judicial processes and will allow it to unfold without speculation. Our focus remains on accountability and upholding the rule of law,” the report quoted Free State National Prosecuting Authority Spokesperson Mojalefa Senokotsoane as saying.

According to GroundUp, the numerous appearances of Bester and Magudumana before court last year were “for pre-trial matters such as ensuring that all accused have legal representation, have they have funded lawyers, and that all relevant parties have received documents”.
Bloemfontein High Court Judge Cagney Mmusi, tasked with handling the pre-trial proceedings, said the trial would begin on February 10, 2025, the report said.
