Cape Town – Chief Justice Raymond Zondo has reportedly approached the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria to seek another extension to submit his final report on state capture.
According to Times Live, the final instalment of the report was, by court order, due at the end of April. However, the Chief Justice on Friday said the commission would not be able to deliver all the outstanding sections of the report by that time.
He, therefore, asked for an extension – this time to June 15.
“Unfortunately, although we have covered a lot of ground in March and April in terms of further work on Part IV of the report, we have not been able to complete all the remaining topics that must be covered and will not be able to do so by the end of April,” Zondo stated, according to News24.
He said the delays so far were not a result of neglecting the work of the commission but because “over three years the commission heard a lot of important evidence that needs to be analysed and taken into account”.
According to The Citizen, the commission has been running since 2018 after being appointed by former president Jacob Zuma.
Since then, more than 300 witnesses have given evidence before the commission.
Due to many challenges, including the ones brought by Covid-19, the commission had to be granted extensions which resulted in it costing taxpayers almost R1 billion since its establishment, the report said.
It was granted its fifth and final extension by the Pretoria High Court in September this year to conclude its work.
