Cape Town — The Kwa-Zulu Natal (KZN) government confirmed that the death toll following the recent mudslides in the province has risen to six as authorities hunt for more bodies.
KZN was hit by torrential rain throughout Wednesday evening into Thursday morning and several infrastructures were damaged during the overnight storm.
The KZN Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) confirmed that six people were killed in separate incidents across the province. In one incident, a mudslide crashed into a house with a family of four inside, while another person was buried beneath the rubble when a landslide crashed into the house, SABC News reported.
The Department’s MEC, Thulasizwe Buthelezei said a child was also missing as disaster teams are on the ground in an attempt to assist communities. Buthelezi said the hardest hit areas were in the south of the province, while the teams are still searching for any more bodies buried beneath the mudslides.

According to TimesLIVE, the eThekwini municipality said disaster management and emergency services responded to the collapse of formal and informal settlements. Four fatalities were reported in Folweni, KwaMakhutha, Demat and Ensimbini after walls collapsed while occupants were asleep.
