Cape Town — The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) revealed that it had exceeded all its performance targets and it was saving the state R8 billion in the previous financial year.
In a series of X posts, the SIU revealed a number of key figures that contributed significantly to the extra savings of the past year, which included R2.28 billion in cash recovery, the highest in the SIU’s 27-year history.
Additionally, the SIU prevented state losses of R2.3 billion and secured cash and asset recoveries of R1.6 billion.

The SIU revealed that it set aside contracts worth R2.13 billion through the Special Tribunal and the High Court of South Africa. The legal action ensures that public funds are recovered and redirected for their intended purposes.
“This achievement underscores the SIU’s ongoing commitment to fighting corruption, maladministration, malpractice and safeguarding state assets,” it said.
The SIU also received an unqualified audit outcome for its financial performance, with the SIU’s Head Advocate, Andy Mothibi, highlighting the significant role of investigations into state-owned entities such as Eskom, Transnet and the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS).
“The Transnet recoveries amounted to R710 104 826,03, R500 000 000 from Eskom, and the NSFAS investigation totalled R191 027 281,50 by the end of the 2023/24 financial year,” he said.
The SIU also closed more than 1 900 investigations under published proclamations and submitted a further 26 reports to the President to outline the investigation outcomes.

The SIU said it remained committed to concluding the final year of its five-year turnaround plan to combat corruption, fraud and maladministration in the public sector.
The next few years would focus on building on the success of previous strategies and focus on developing and implementing the National Corruption Prevention Strategy.
“The SIU continues to safeguard the public purse, ensuring that state resources are protected and used for the benefit of all South Africans. We call on All South Africans to be involved in the fight against corruption.”
