Cape Town — Showmax and Multichoice are not changing their minds regarding the decision to air ‘Tracking Thabo Bester’ – an exclusive docu-series detailing the incredible story of rapist and murderer, Thabo Bester, and his accomplice, Nandipha Magudumana.
Magudumana and her legal team were the first to act when they sent an urgent letter of appeal asking Multichoice to reconsider airing the documentary. Her lawyers argued that streaming the documentary could cause “irreparable harm” and give rise to claims of damages which she had a right to reserve.
According to EWN, Bester and his team followed suite by demanding a copy of the docu-series before it takes to air on 15 and 22 March. He stated that he did not grant any rights to produce, distribute or commercially exploit a documentary or film on his life.
Both complainants gave Showmax until Saturday afternoon to hand over the copy, threatening legal action should it fail to do so.
In a joint statement, Multichoice and Showmax revealed they received the letters from both parites, asking them to stop the airing of the documentary, but they remained firm in their stance and said given the serious allegations against the two and the overwhelming public interest, Showmax believes it is improtna that the public sees it and can form their own views, IOL reported.
“Showmax will vigorously defend the right of the public to do so. As a responsible media platform, Showmax has taken all necessary steps to ensure that our documentary adheres to the standards of journalistic integrity and ethical reporting. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as necessary,” the statement read.
Multichoice has hit back at #ThaboBester and #DrNandiphaMagudumana saying Bester’s prison escape caught both media and the public’s attention, therefore, members of the public must see the four-part documentary.
