Johannesburg — A South African-owned e-hailing app called Shesha (“hurry” in Zulu) is set to launch next month as a collaboration between the taxi industry and the e-hailing operators.
Shesha will bring competition to current international e-hailing giants operating in South Africa, Uber and Bolt/ The company promised the best security on tis services, as concerns have grown for passengers, especially women. The founders want the wealth generated by the company to remain within the South African borders, SABC News reported.
Shesha’s Project Manager, Portia Kekeletu says the company will collaborate with the local taxi industry including the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) and National Taxi Alliance (NTA).
According to Shesha spokesperson, Nomsa Mdhluli, fingerprint ID will be linked to the Home Affairs database to verify drivers upon their registration, as well as facial recognition, TimeLIVE reported.

Shesha said riders will have consistent and fair pricing unaffected by external factors, such as weather or demand fluctuations, and can request from anywhere in Gauteng with drivers free to operate in the entire region. The company will also use a cashless system through a secure wallet will provide safety for riders and drivers.
The National Taxi Alliance’s Piet Mahlangu says a memorandum of understanding has been signed between the two parties to put an end to the violence affecting them, according to EWN.
“The launch of Shesha also signifies the new-found spirit of cooperation and unity between the taxi industry. The operation is essential for building a robust economy and maintaining the safety of our communities. It’s putting emphasis on safety.”
