Cape Town – Cape Town LGBTI community groups have condemned the recent attack and humiliation of one of their members by three young women who were expected to appear at the Khayelitsha Magistrate Court on Friday.
Thabiso Motaung, 19, who is a member of the LGBTI community was allegedly attacked on Sunday by the trio she once called friends.
The traumatised Motaung detailed events of the attack and called for no bail for the suspects on her Facebook page.
“So yesterday I was beaten by people whom I called my friends,” she wrote.
She said that she was beaten, humiliated and stripped naked while people took videos of her.
According to Motaung, the women brutally assaulted her because she was allegedly “disobedient”.
She said they beat her and allegedly threatened to burn her home.
“I don’t think I’ll be okay not anytime soon, yho these girls zindibulele ndiphila shame (which translates to they’ve buried me alive,” she said in one post.
Motaung’s aunt Yofezwa Lose said the perpetrators had “killed her dignity”, adding that Motaung had to walk from Khayelitsha C section to section D naked, reported IOL.
“They humiliated her badly in such a way that they stripped her naked and after beating her up they played with Thabiso’s body parts on video … that is on record,” the report quoted Lose as saying.
Lose said she was worried about Motaung’s emotional state as she starts grade 12.
She said there will be a peaceful march in support of Thabiso at the Khayelitsha Magistrates Court where they will demand that perpetrators should not be granted bail the publication said.
Meanwhile, Phefumla Qeer Collective said that they were saddened by the gruesome act.
“The incident was captured in videos that are eyesore. The act done by the girls seemed to be intentional as they ripped her clothes off and even wanted to rip of her underwear,” the organisation said in a statement.
The organisation called for the perpetrators to face the “are of the law” and the justice system to take measure that will restore hope for many member of the LGBTIAQP+ community.
