Cape Town – A woman suffered a severe hip injury when a freak wave knocked over her when she was swimming at a beach along KwaZulu-Natal’s north coast on Tuesday.
Volunteer group Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) received a call for a person “in distress” at 3.30pm.
CERT volunteers together with emergency services were dispatched.
Upon arrival, they found “an adult female who had been swimming when a freak wave knocked her over, injuring her. She was treated by CERT volunteers together with paramedics before being transported to hospital for further care”, CERT said.
According to Times Live, CERT’s Nazir Sadack said that the woman was at the water’s edge when the incident occurred.
“She said she heard a sound like a break to [her] hip and she couldn’t walk thereafter. We are not sure whether it was a dislocation or a fractured hip,” the report quoted Sadack as saying.
