Cape Town – The South African Chapter of the International Association of Women Judges (SAC–IAWJ) has expressed deep sadness over the death of Regional Court Magistrate Mamello Thamae, describing it as a loss to the legal community.
Thamae’s body was discovered in a vehicle in Lesotho after she and her husband were reported missing in Heilbron.
Thamae’s husband has been arrested and faces extradition to face a murder charge.
“She had a sterling disposition. She was a hardworking, dedicated, passionate and distinguished member of the judiciary committed to her professional duties as a regional magistrate and acting judge,” the SAC–IAWJ said in a statement.

The association has also called for swift police investigations into her death and highlighted the ongoing problem of gender-based violence.
“South Africa continues to be one of the most violent countries in the world regarding women and girls’ safety and protection.
“We strongly disapprove of such activities and call upon the police to conduct a swift and thorough investigation into Magistrate and Acting Judge Thamae’s untimely death.”
