Cape Town – The is reportedly considering excluding over 90 high-profile members, including former Health Minister Zweli Mkhize and others implicated in corruption and state capture, from its election candidate lists.
The ANC’s integrity commission has issued a report recommending their exclusion, with five members cleared and 62 referred for disciplinary hearings, The Citizen reported.
The report, highlighting ANC members involved in corruption and extensive state capture, was recently delivered to the party’s secretary-general, Fikile Mbalula, in anticipation of the 8th of March deadline for political parties to submit their candidate lists to the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC), the report said.
As per the report, the commission recommended the exclusion of several individuals, including former Health Minister Zweli Mkhize, Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Zizi Kodwa, Deputy Human Settlements, Water and Sanitation Minister David Mahlobo, and former North West premier Supra Mahumapelo, from the candidate list, City Press reported.
Nevertheless, the report absolved President Cyril Ramaphosa of any wrongdoing concerning the Phala Phala game farm scandal, and similarly, Mineral and Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe was cleared of any culpability in the Bosasa saga.
The ANC’s national executive committee is expected to discuss and approve the report, while an emergency meeting of the top seven leadership will be held before the Electoral Commission of South Africa’s deadline for candidate submissions.
The report will not be made public.
