Johannesburg — The Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) said operations resumed as per normal late on Thursday evening after a municipal power outage affected the OR Tambo International Airport.
In a statement released on Thursday night, ACSA said the airport remains fully operational despite the temporary power outage that affected the greater Ekurhuleni Metro region.
“The power failure, which occurred at 19:20, was caused by a trip in the municipal grid. The local municipality is currently investigating the cause of the disruption. ACSA is not responsible for identifying the source of the issue, as the power failure lies outside of our control,” it said.

ACSA emphasised that all critical airport services, including terminals, airfield operations and cargo handling were unaffected as services were back up and running in no time.
“The airport’s backup generators kicked in within 15 seconds of the power loss, ensuring there was no impact on airport operations. All generators have been successfully verified to be taking loads and are fully operational,” ACSA said.
While services resumed smoothly, ACSA said it would monitor the situation closely and provide updates once more information was made available. It encouraged passengers to stay in contact with their airlines for any other changes or to keep an eye out online.
“We thank our passengers for their understanding and patience during this time,” it concluded.
