Cape Town —A 35-year-old serial rapist died in a holding cell on Thursday, hours after pleading guilty to 14 charges of rape.
The Citizen reported Johannes Jojo Shabangu fell ill and collapsed in a holding cell, while the court was on recess.
Johannes Shabangu, who had also pleaded guilty to 11 charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances, was appearing in the North West High Court sitting in the Ga-Rankuwa Regional Court, when he collapsed and died.
The charges relate to Shabangu and his accomplices’ five-year reign of terror in the Winterveldt area between July 2012 and December 2019. According to the Citizen, the youngest victim was 14 years old when she was raped in June 2015.
SABC News quoted NPA spokesperson Henry Mamothame as saying: “The court had already found him guilty on these charges. He was declared dead by paramedics who were called on site to give him medical attention. A declaration certificate of death was presented to court and the judge declared this matter as finalised.”
