Welkom — The Matjhabeng Local Municipality has been busy with clean-up operations in the area following a devastating storm that ripped through Welkom this past weekend.
According to Welkom Mayoral spokesperson, Tshediso Tlali, the damage resulted in important damage to schools, businesses and homes.
Tlali said the Welkom Fire Station, HTS and Unitas Schools and several businesses and residential properties were affected, IOL reported.
“The municipality extends its heartfelt sympathies to all residents and organisations impacted by this unforeseen natural disaster,”, the report quoted him as saying.
According to TimesLIVE, Tlali said emergency response teams have been dispatched to assess the extent of the damage and provide urgent relief where necessary.
“In collaboration with relevant stakeholders, we are prioritising the restoration of essential services and infrastructure, with a focus on the fire station and affected schools,” Tlali said.
The South African Weather Services (SAWS) issued weather warnings across the country including an Orange Level 6 and 8 in Kwa-Zulu Natal (KZN), an Orange Level 5 warning in Gauteng, southern Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and the northern part of the Free State.
A Yellow Level 2 warning for disruptive rain has been forecast over the eastern parts of both Free State and North West, extreme south-eastern parts of the Eastern Cape, north-eastern parts of Mpumalanga, as well as parts of Limpopo, excluding the south-central and extreme north-east.
