Cape Town – A second man involved in a racial incident at Maselspoort resort, where black teenage boys were prevented from entering the pool area, has been found guilty of attempted murder and sentenced to a fine of R20 000 or two years’ imprisonment.
The man, Jakobus Klaasen, was also sentenced to five years’ imprisonment, suspended for five years, with the condition of avoiding assault-related offenses, Times Live reported.
The incident involved Klaasen, Stephanus van der Westhuizen, and Johan Nel, who attempted to stop the boys from accessing the pool, claiming it was reserved for white people only.
A video capturing the racially motivated assault quickly spread across social media platforms. In the footage, three Caucasian men were observed attempting to hinder a group of teenagers from swimming in a shared pool, which the assailants claimed was exclusively designated for white individuals.
Furthermore, the video depicted the men engaging in aggressive behaviour, including shoving, strangling, yanking one individual’s hair, and submerging another underwater.
Klaasen was charged with attempted murder for attempting to drown one of the boys. Van der Westhuizen had previously pleaded guilty to assault and was fined R4 000 or given 12 months’ imprisonment.
According to EWN, the Free State NPA’s Phaladi Shuping said: “He was further sentenced to another five years that were wholly suspended for the same charge of attempted murder. He was in addition sentenced to 36 months correctional supervision after he pleaded guilty to a charge of assault.”
The case against Nel has been postponed to December 6 for trial.
