Cape Town – The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has advised the public to use social media for weather updates following a security breach on Sunday evening that disrupted its ICT systems.
The breach affected SAWS’ email system and website, which are crucial for disseminating weather information.
“The SAWS ICT systems went down on Sunday evening, 26 January due to a criminal security breach. Our aviation and marine services were affected as well as emails and website, however, alternative communication measures were put in place. The public is advised to rely in our social,” SAWS said.
Media platforms for weather information. The SAWS is in the process of reporting the criminal act to relevant authorities. The attack was the second in the space of two days after the first attempt on Saturday 25 Januarie failed.

SAWS’ ICT service providers are investigating the breach and working on restoring the systems.
The incident has been reported to the relevant authorities, it said.
