Cape Town – International Relations and Cooperation Minister Ronald Lamola says South Africa’s upcoming G20 Presidency is a significant milestone in the country’s democracy, comparable to the 2010 World Cup and the national response to COVID-19.
“After the [2010] World Cup and the collective fight we mounted as a nation against COVID-19, it will be our biggest national project,” Lamola said.
During the last two days we were at 3 amazing public diplomacy events with @MISTRA_SA, @Official_TUT (Dr. Tlou Cholo Foundation), and @UKZN (@LuthuliMuseum). The discussions were insightful discussions. Together, we are shaping a better world better africa. pic.twitter.com/c8JvQtGhpA

Speaking at the MISTRA Conference on Friday, Lamola said that South Africa, which will assume the G20 Presidency from Brazil in December, will focus on solidarity, cooperation, and sustainable development.
Key priorities include the Just Energy Transition, financing for development, transforming global financial systems, and infrastructure development.
“We must reverse the uneven distribution of resources for just transition. It is inconceivable that Africa receives less than 3% of the global climate change financing, while being the most affected continent. We will advocate for more resources to be allocated to Africa for climate change,” the minister said.
