Cape Town – The South African Police Service (SAPS) plans to recruit 10 000 new members in the upcoming week to be trained next year.
National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola announced the recruitment drive during a career expo in East London, SABC reported.
The goal is to increase police member numbers to reach 2010 levels of around 200 000, in order to meet the demands of the growing population and provide necessary services, Masemola said.
Currently, there are approximately 150 000 police members in the country.
General Masemola emphasised the importance of having a sufficient number of police officers to respond effectively to emergencies and said that the new recruits will boost morale and enhance the police force’s capabilities.
“You can’t have all the technology; you have to have a response when there is a need to do so. You have to have police members to do the service. We are happy that these numbers will boost the moral and boost also the numbers we have currently.”
Additionally, there are already 10 000 prospective police members currently undergoing training.
