Johannesburg — The South African Police Services (SAPS) have continued its efforts to put a stop to the sale of illicit goods that hinder the growth of the economy.
A SAPS statement revealed its National Counterfeit unit recently led an integrated takedown operation in Johannesburg CBD where the team confiscated counterfeit goods worth over R9 million.
“The team comprised of SAPS members, officials from the South African Revenue Services (SARS), Gauteng Traffic, Brand Protectors, Crime Prevention Wardens and security companies.” SAPS spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Amanda van Wyk, said.

It was also revealed that the team seized over 11 000 counterfeit items including clothes, shoes, watches, handbangs and sunglasses, which was the third such takedown in Gauteng in the past four weeks.
“In addition, the team also seized over R8 million worth of counterfeit goods during a takedown operation in Rustenburg, North West province last week. This brings the total value of counterfeit goods seized for the past four weeks to over R30 million.” Van Wyk said.
