Johannesburg — South African Police Services (SAPS) in Johannesburg seized counterfeit goods to the value of R13m and five suspects were arrested during a takedown operation.
SAPS are continuing in their bid to stop the illicit sale of counterfeit goods which has had a detrimental effect on the economic growth in the country, Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Amanda van Wyk, said in a SAPS Statement.
“A team comprising of SAPS members from various units, officials from the South African Revenue Services (SARS), brand protectors and security companies operationalised information and proceeded to three identified addresses in the JHB CBD.” Van Wyk said.

During the seizure operation, police confiscated more than 18 000 counterfeit goods that including clothing apparel, shoes, bags, caps, sunglasses, and watches. The team also seized various electronic goods and machines.
“During the operation, the team also dismantled a hidden manufacturing plant and storage facility where counterfeit goods were distributed to shops in and around JHB. At this location, police seized large quantities of counterfeit items including a computer hard drive, silk screening and laser cutting machines,” Van Wyk added.
The suspects are expected to appear before the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court soon.
