Cape Town – The South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) has expressed its willingness to resolve disputes with the City of Cape Town and focus on the work of a task team.
Santaco’s legal action against the city was dismissed by the Western Cape High Court on Friday.
The council had claimed that taxis were being seized without adhering to the terms of an agreement to end a week-long strike.
The City of Cape Town insisted that it followed the National Land Transport Act and welcomed the court’s judgment, which clarified impoundment conditions such as lack of permits, licenses, or roadworthiness.
Santaco’s provincial deputy chairperson, Nceba Enge, felt justified that taxis could only be impounded for agreed-upon reasons, criticising the city’s reports as damaging to their image.
“Santaco feels vindicated in its view that minibus taxis can only be impounded on the three grounds agreed upon,” said Enge.
