Cape Town — The Western Cape e-hailing Association (WCEA) said it will host a safety campaign after one of its drivers allegedly stabbed two women over a drop-off dispute.
The 39-year-old driver was arrested after he was accused of stabbing two women over a drop-off dispute that led to a altercation. Videos and images of the altercation have since trended on social media, with Bolt suspending the driver pending the outcome of the investigation. According to WCEA chairperson, Siyabonga Hlabisa, said safety measures for passengers and drivers are often not adhered, EWN reported.
“There are features that have been put in place but in most cases, there are other things that we’ve noticed, [such as] the issue of fake profiling, [and] the issue also of improper procedures. That’s why we will be running a campaign about the fact that there’s not even a thing of a background check being done by some of these app companies.” Hlabisa said.
The attack on two women allegedly by their Bolt driver has again placed the focus on the dangers women face in SA. Activist Lebogang Ramafoko says there has to be a monitor for e-hailing services that checks information & ensures safety standards.

The altercation started after the driver allegedly refused to drop the group of friends at their requested location in Dunoons after he had been paid his R90 fare, IOL reported.
The driver wanted to drop the two women off at a petrol station, but they refused and drove them to Table View police station. Police instructed him to complete the trip as he had been paid the fare. An altercation ensued and the driver then allegedly snatched a phone from one of the women who began filming.
The driver then stopped the car and the group of friends ran away, but not before he managed to stab two of them with a sharp object resembling a knife.
The suspect will appear in court later on Friday on a charge of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.
