Cape Town – The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a warning for light snow in the high-lying areas of the Eastern Cape and southern KwaZulu-Natal due to a significant drop in temperatures expected this weekend.
The warning follows a recent September 19-22 snow event that caused significant disruptions in the Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, and Eastern Cape.
Snowfall is anticipated to begin in the Western Cape early on Sunday morning (September 29) and move eastward into KwaZulu-Natal by Monday morning (September 30).

While the snowfall will clear from the Western Cape and western Eastern Cape by Monday evening, it is expected to persist in the eastern parts of Eastern Cape and southern KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday (October 1).
“Snowfall is expected to clear up in the Western Cape and western parts of the Eastern Cape by Monday evening. Snowfall will, however, persist on Tuesday (1 October 2024) over the eastern parts of Eastern Cape and southern KwaZulu-Natal,” SAWS said on Thursday.
The weather will shift due to an upper trough system linked to a high-pressure system, leading to cooler temperatures across the escarpment regions, with daytime highs dropping below 10°C in some areas.

Additionally, strong winds and significant ocean swells of 4-6 meters are expected along the south coast during this period. Daily rainfall is not projected to exceed 30 mm from September 29 to October 1.
The weather is expected to improve by Tuesday afternoon as the high-pressure system weakens.
