Cape Town – Former human rights commissioner and anti-apartheid activist Dr Max Coleman has died at the age of 95, reports said on Monday.
According to Times Live, Coleman’s family confirmed the news, saying that he died peacefully in his sleep on Sunday.
“He is mourned and will be forever missed by his loving wife Audrey, sons Brian, Neil, Keith and Colin, their partners and children,” the report quoted his family as saying.
There will be a private funeral service followed by a public memorial to celebrate his life, said the report.
Coleman and his wife were founding members of the Detainees Parents Support Committee (DPSC), an organisation that was formed to provide food, clothing and legal assistance to detainees under apartheid, South African History said on its website.
The organisation also monitored and publicised state repression.
