Cape Town – The South African Parliament was cordoned off after police discovered a suspicious package in the premises on Wednesday.
Moloto Mothapo, Parliament’s spokesperson, confirmed the news on Twitter.
“Earlier this morning the South African Police Service noticed a suspicious package left unattended at the Parliamentary precincts, and immediately engaged normal safety protocols by its bomb disposal specialists, including cordoning off the immediate vicinity,” said Mothapo.

Mothapo later tweeted that no immediate threat had been identified in the precincts. He said that police remained at the Parliamentary precinct and were taking the necessary precautions.
He also apologised for any inconvenience caused to Members of Parliament (MPs), staff, and guests.

It was unclear what was inside the package.
“While the police remain at the precincts and are undertaking necessary precautionary measures, Parliament confirms there is no immediate danger posed to the parliamentary community. Parliament apologises for any inconvenience this may have caused to the MPs, staff and guests,”said Mothapo.
