Johannesburg – President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed concern over the increasing number of South African nurses leaving the country for work abroad despite a local nursing shortage.
Speaking at the Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (DENOSA)’s 9th Congress in Boksburg on Tuesday, Ramaphosa acknowledged the challenges faced by nurses in public hospitals.
He urged discussions on how to address international recruitment, questioning whether financial incentives are the main driving factor.
“In an environment where South Africa has a shortage of nurses, we are encouraged that the issue of South African nurses being recruited in large numbers by other countries is also on the agenda,” Ramaphosa said.
