Cape Town — The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) investigated one of the “deadliest” road accidents in the Eastern Cape, which led to the death of 15 people.
The crash occurred along the N9 route outside Graaff-Reinet. It involved a head-on collision between a minibus taxi and a Mazda CX-5. Traffic officials said this marked the deadliest crash during the festive season, IOL reported.
“The information at hand states that the number of people who died increased to 15, all six occupants from the Mazda CX5 and nine from the Quantum taxi. Eleven other people suffered serious to light injuries and were transported to a medical facility for assessment,” RTMC’s Simon Zwane said.
Preliminary reports said the Mazda was travelling from Middelburg to Graaf-Reinet, while the taxi was travelling from the Western Cape to Middelburg. The cause of the crash remains unknown.
Transport Minister, Barbara Creecy and Deputy Minister, Mkhuleko Hlengwa, sent messages of condolences to the bereaved families and wished a speedy recovery to those who were injured.

The Eastern Cape’s Department of Transport spokesperson, Unathi Binqose, also described the accident as the “deadliest” and “worst” seen on the roads during December.
“Those driving long distances should take regular stops to avoid fatigue. Fatigue is one of the leading contributors to road accidents, with research showing that drowsy and distracted drivers are significantly more likely to be involved in collisions. Drivers should or prioritise rest, especially before long-distance driving. The average adult should aim for eight hours of sleep. Fatigue is worsened by distractions, such as texting, talking on the phone, or using in-car entertainment systems while driving,” Zwane said.
