Cape Town — With just under a month to go before the start of the December school holidays, traffic authorities are warning those who intend on travelling to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy.
“Motorists should ensure that brakes, the steering rack, lights, tyres and windscreen wipers are in good condition before embarking on their trips,” the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) urged.
“Remember to have a spare wheel and the toolkit for emergency situations,” it added.

The RTMC also reminded motorists to ensure their driver’s licences and car licence disks were up to date. It indicated that a total of 624 333 licence discs would expire at the end of November.
“A further 1 026 269 will expire at the end of December 2024. Motorists can conveniently renew vehicle discs online using online.natis.gov.za where they can opt for their discs to be delivered at the address of their own choice,” it said.
While Transport Minister Barbara Creecy officially launched the national Festive Season Road Safety Campaign on 17 November, regional road safety campaigns got under way today in the Eastern Cape, Western Cape and Ekurhuleni in Gauteng.
Last year, 1 427 people died on South Africa’s roads from 1 December 2023 to 30 January 2024, a 2.3% drop on the previous year, according to TimesLive.
