Cape Town – The Senzo Meyiwa murder trial is set to begin with fresh proceedings on Tuesday, and the accused have yet to enter their pleas.
Retired judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng is presiding over the trial in the Pretoria high court and has informed the accused that they have the right to apply for bail in the new proceedings.
“In the spirit of the new proceedings, you are advised that you have the right to apply for bail. What happened in the past is the past,” said judge Mokgoatlheng.
The murder of Senzo Meyiwa occurred in October 2014 during a robbery, with several individuals present, including Meyiwa’s then-girlfriend Kelly Khumalo.

The accused in the trial, Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya, Bongani Sandiso Ntanzi, Mthobisi Prince Mncube, Mthokoziseni Maphisa, and Sifisokuhle Nkani Ntuli, face charges of premeditated murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, possession of firearms without a license, and possession of ammunition.
The state has provided them with new indictments, with slight amendments to the charge sheet.
Both the state and the defence lawyers have requested a postponement to address various issues and complete necessary paperwork.
The trial will continue with a pretrial conference on Tuesday, as per the judge’s decision.
