The suspension came following the death of two drivers last week which meant all 58 bus stations were closed, leaving commuters stranded and looking for alternative transport. The Gauteng police are currently searching for the suspects behind the attacks.
According to EWN, the City of Johannesburg said it received a plan from the safety and security forum that detailed the escort of Rea Vaya bus drivers and passengers, and the visibility of metro police was seen at the main station in Soweto to guard operations as commuters go on their trips.
The city urged key transport players to support all efforts to stop violence against bus transit that leads to the suspensions of services.
According to SABC News, City of Johannesburg spokesperson, Virgil James, called for cooperation to prevent future attacks and said internal discussions were held with transport management, staff, and bus operators Piotrans and Litsamaiso to outline security measures and reassure employees of their safety.
