Cape Town – President Cyril Ramaphosa has welcomed the State of Qatar’s announcement of a four-day humanitarian pause in the Gaza conflict.
He commended Qatar, Egypt, and the United States for their mediation efforts, aiming to release Palestinian detainees and Israeli hostages, along with providing relief aid to Gaza.
While acknowledging the temporary nature of the pause, Ramaphosa expressed hope that it would contribute to ending the overall conflict.
“As a member of the international community that stands for peace, justice and the rule of international law in all parts of the world, South Africa welcomes the agreement reached.
“It is my hope that the achievement of this pause will strengthen efforts to achieve an outright end to the current conflict.
“This pause, which regrettably implies a possible resumption of conflict at some point, must be accompanied by tireless efforts to secure a durable political resolution of the decades-long challenge in the Middle East,” Ramaphosa said.
He emphasized the need for sustained efforts to achieve a lasting political resolution in the Middle East and urged collaboration between Palestine, Israel, regional nations, and the international community to support the two-state solution for peace and sustainable development.
