Cape Town – President Cyril Ramaphosa used his New Year’s address to the nation to reflect on the transformative political and economic milestones of 2024, highlighting South Africa’s progress under the Government of National Unity (GNU).
Following the May 29 general elections, which yielded no outright majority for any political party, South Africa entered uncharted territory.
A New Era of Promise
Ramaphosa hailed the outcomes of the May 2024 elections, which led to the formation of the GNU, describing it as a pivotal moment for the country. He emphasised the government’s commitment to reducing poverty, lowering the cost of living, and improving service delivery.
“The parties are all working to strengthen the capacity of the state to deliver services to our people. The outcomes of the May 2024 elections and establishment of the Government of National Unity have enabled South Africa to enter a new era that holds great promise.”
Progress on the Energy Crisis
Highlighting one of the country’s major achievements, Ramaphosa noted South Africa’s recovery from a debilitating energy crisis that had severely impacted households and businesses.

On Tuesday, Eskom announced the synchronisation of Unit 2 of the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station to the national grid. Alongside Unit 1, Koeberg is now expected to contribute 5% of the country’s total electricity supply, easing the burden of load shedding.
“We continue the work to get more power onto the grid, to drive massive new investment in electricity generation, and to establish a competitive electricity market,” Ramaphosa said.
Solidarity Amid Global and Regional Turmoil
The president also addressed South Africa’s stance on global conflicts, reiterating solidarity with Palestine amid the ongoing Gaza conflict. He condemned the violence and called for an end to hostilities.

“Just as we attained our freedom through the support and solidarity of many people and nations around the world, we continue to stand in solidarity with the victims of injustice in other parts of the world.
“We have stood firm in our support for the struggle of the people of Palestine.
“As the conflict in the Middle East continues, as genocide is perpetrated against the people of Gaza and as Israeli hostages remain in captivity, we continue to call for the cessation of hostilities and the release of hostages,” Ramaphosa said.
Focus on Jobs and Municipal Services
Ramaphosa underscored the government’s responsibility to grow an inclusive economy and create jobs. He highlighted the need for urgent action to support municipalities in delivering consistent and quality services and to address severe water supply challenges in parts of the country.
To foster national unity, he announced plans for a National Dialogue aimed at bringing South Africans together to develop a shared vision for the country’s future.
Looking Ahead: South Africa on the Global Stage
The president celebrated South Africa’s role as the host of the first-ever G20 Summit on African soil in 2025.
“In 2025, we will be hosting the first G20 Summit on African soil.
“Through our leadership of the G20 we will work for solidarity, equality and sustainable development that will have an impact on many peoples around the world,” said Ramaphosa.
A Call for Collective Action
While celebrating 2024 as a year of triumphs, Ramaphosa acknowledged its tragedies, including the deaths of children in Soweto and other areas due to contaminated food. He urged South Africans to work together toward a brighter future.
“As we embark on a new year, I call on each and every South African to be part of the journey towards a better future for all,” he concluded.
