Cape Town – President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed sadness over the deaths of two South African National Defence Force (SANDF) soldiers in a mortar attack in Sake, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), which also injured twenty others.
As Commander-in-Chief, Ramaphosa extended condolences to the families and colleagues of the fallen soldiers and wished a swift recovery to the injured.
“As we mourn the deaths and casualties inflicted on our soldiers, we value and are humbled by the sacrifices they have made for the cause of peace and stability in our region, and they shall not be forgotten,” Ramaphosa said in a statement on Thursday.
He praised their sacrifices for regional peace and stability and promised logistical and psychosocial support for the affected.
The SANDF is part of the SADC Mission in the DRC, deployed to help restore peace amid rising conflicts since December 2023.
