President Cyril Ramaphosa is embarking on a working visit to attend the G20 Leaders’ Summit in New Delhi, India, this weekend.
He will be accompanied by the Department of International Relations and Cooperation Minister Naledi Pandor, the Presidency said.
As well as taking part in working sessions themed One Earth, One Family and One Future, he will hold bilateral meetings with Heads of State and Government to strengthen South Africa’s diplomatic, economic and cultural ties.
“South Africa is a member of the G20 and its participation seeks to provide a strategic foresight in establishing an economic and international policy platform that will drive and negotiate the best possible outcomes for the country, Africa and the developing world,” the Presidency said, reported IOL.
The meeting is being hosted by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. South Africa will assume the G20 Presidency in 2025, after India.
AFP reports that the G20 members remain divided over the war in Ukraine, debt restructuring and the phasing out of fossil fuels. Russia’s Vladimir Putin and China’s XI Jinping are not scheduled to attend the two-day affair, however President Joe Biden is reportedly on his way to the meeting, which starts on Saturday and ends on Sunday
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s efforts to urge G20 leaders to sidestep deep divisions to address critical global issues – such as debt restructuring and commodity price shocks following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine – have been unsuccessful in ministerial meetings ahead of the summit, according to AFP.
