Cape Town — President Cyril Ramaphosa clarified the misunderstanding over visa applications that he made during the South Africa-Nigeria Bi-National Commission on Tuesday 3 December 2024.
In a statement, the Presidency clarified the comments made regarding the simplified visa process for Nigerian nationals. As part of the work underway to modernise the streamlined visa application process, the South African mission in Nigeria has improved the process of improving the efficiency and convenience of the visa application process.
“This is part of the visa reforms initiated by the South African Government to enable economic activities and boost tourism while protecting our national security. The modernisation of the visa application process does not compromise the integrity of the visa system,” Presidency spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya said.

Magwenya added that prospective travellers can apply for a visa without submitting their passports with their applications, and they are only required to submit certified copies of the biopage of the passports, where their actual passports will be availed during the application process.
“Once a visa has been approved, they are required to submit their passports for the process to be completed and for the visa to be affixed to the passport,” Mgawenya said.
These changes have improved the customer experience while ensuring the security and integrity of the overall visa application process.
