Cape Town – President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed sadness over the death of 11 mineworkers at Impala Platinum Mine Shaft 11 in Rustenburg, North West.
The workers were injured on Monday when the conveyance they were in rapidly descended during hoisting.
Ramaphosa extended condolences to the families and wished a full recovery to the injured workers.
“The President offers his deep condolences to the families of the deceased mineworkers.
“The President extends his thoughts to the management and staff of Implats and wishes the injured workers, especially those who are in critical care, a full recovery,” the Presidency said in a statement on Wednesday.
He called for a thorough investigation under the Mine Health and Safety Act, emphasising the importance of protecting mineworkers.
Meanwhile, Mineral Resources and Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe has pledged to investigate the accident and visited the mine on Tuesday.
