Cape Town – President Cyril Ramaphosa has arrived in Rio de Janeiro to lead South Africa’s participation in the G20 Leaders’ Summit, held from November 18 to 19, 2024.
The summit focuses on “Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet,” prioritising social inclusion, combating hunger and poverty, energy transitions, sustainable development, and reforming global governance institutions.
“Brazil’s G20 Presidency continues the global south rotating Presidency and during its tenure prioritises social inclusion and the fight against hunger and poverty, energy transitions and the promotion of sustainable development in its economic, social, environmental dimensions and the reform of global governance Institutions,” the Presidency said in a statement.
On November 17, Ramaphosa will launch the “Leveraging the Potential of Renewables – The Road to Johannesburg Campaign.”

During plenary sessions on November 18, he will address hunger, poverty, and global governance reforms. South Africa will assume the G20 Presidency on December 1, 2024, under the theme “Solidarity, Equality, and Sustainability.”
South Africa’s G20 participation emphasises advancing national interests, promoting Africa’s development, fostering South-South cooperation, and influencing global multilateral systems.
Ramaphosa is accompanied by Ministers Ronald Lamola and Khumbudzo Ntshavheni. The G20 represents the world’s major economies, accounting for 85% of global GDP and two-thirds of the global population.
