Cape Town – The family of a first-year student at Stellenbosch University, Babalo Ndwayana, is reportedly calling for the white student, Theuns du Toit, who urinated on their son’s study material, including a laptop, to be banned from all South African universities.
Du Toit, also a first-year at the university, barged into Ndwayane’s Huis Marais room and urinated on his study desk this past weekend.
Ndwayana recorded Du Toit during the incident. The video quickly went viral on social media, causing outrage.
According to Times Live, Ndwayana informed his parents in Mdantsane, Eastern Cape, of the incident.
“I was shocked when I heard about this. I soon grew afraid for my son because he is in another province. I immediately wrote an email to the vice-chancellor of the university but unfortunately I have not received a response. My son told me he was faced with fighting that young man but he opted to take a video in which he was told by this young man that this is a ‘white thing, boy’,” said Ndwayana’s father, Kaduka as quoted by the report.
The university has condemned Du Toit’s actions and suspended him indefinitely pending the outcome of the investigation.
“The University strongly condemns the destructive, hurtful and racist incident that was captured on a cell phone video in the Huis Marais residence on the Stellenbosch University campus in the early hours of Sunday morning. The alleged perpetrator was suspended from the University today. A further swift but detailed investigation will determine the final outcomes. Expulsion and/or criminal charges are not excluded from the possible available options, based on the investigation’s findings,” the university said in a statement.
Ndwayana’s father said the expulsion was not enough. He wanted Du Toit banned from all universities for a certain period.
“We are not happy at all. One would have thought incidents of this nature were a thing of the past. The expulsion only is not enough. I want him to be banned from all universities for a certain period. An example has to be made to prevent this happening again,” Times Live quoted Kaduka as saying.
Ndwayana has since filed a case against Du Toit at the Stellenbosch police station for malicious property damage and crimen injuria.
