Johannesburg – Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has launched a probe into allegations that the provincial government is spending R34 million per month on leased office space, despite owning vacant buildings that could be used instead.
This follows a wave of public concern sparked by recent media reports, which highlighted the apparent wasteful expenditure.
In a statement on Sunday, the Gauteng Provincial Government confirmed that Lesufi had taken note of the reports and was “deeply concerned” by the implications.
“The Premier has noted recent media reports alleging wasteful expenditure of R34 million per month on leased office space for government offices, while some government-owned buildings stand vacant,” the statement read.
Lesufi is expected to appoint a task team to review all current lease agreements across provincial departments.
The probe will examine the terms of these contracts and assess whether the public purse has been misused.
