Cape Town – Condolences are pouring in following the death of prominent South African paramedic, Paul Herbst on Tuesday.
Herbst, who was the director of Medi Response in KwaZulku-Natal (KZN), died just days after returning from earthquake hit Türkiye.
Medi Response announced his untimely passing on Tuesday in a statement.
“We are deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Paul Herbst, director of Medi Response KZN. On behalf of the entire team at Medi Response, we express our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time,” it said.
“Paul was a well-respected and dedicated leader in the field of emergency medical services. His passion for helping others was evident in the work he did every day, and he was known for his unwavering commitment to providing care to those in need.”
Medi Response said the loss of Herbst was a tremendous blow to the community and asked that everyone respect the privacy of his family” during this time of grief”.
IPSS Medical Rescue, where Herbst had previously worked for almost eight years, also sent their condolence, saying Herbst’s death was a tragic loss for all in the industry.
“Our sincere condolences go out to his family and friends during this difficult time,” IPSS said in a statement.
Herbst was part of the Medi Response team under the banner of Gift of The Givers, who travelled to assist Türkiye and Syria following the devastating earthquake that left thousands dead or missing.
The team landed back in the country on Saturday following several days of rescue operations as the disaster entered his recovery phase, Medi Response said in an earlier statement.
