Cape Town — The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) has reiterated its commitment to dealing with fraud at the company after an employee was allegedly involved in fraudulent activities.
An internal investigation revealed three fraudulent transactions by one of their employees, that came to a total of R9 547 000, SA Gov News reported.
“During routine financial review processes, irregular payments were detected, prompting escalation to senior leadership. With the assistance of PRASA Internal Audit department, management engaged an existing independent supplier to conduct a forensic investigation,” they said.
After being interrogated by investigators, , the employee admitted to committing the fraud and subsequently returned the stolen funds.

EWN reported that the employee also admitted to fraud which cost the company R1m, while further confessions revealed another transaction cost a shade under R25m. This brought the total amount in fraud to R34m
The agency said that the staff member was dismissed with immediate effect and a case of fraud had been opened with the South African Police Services (SAPS).
“PRASA’s management remains committed to upholding integrity, transparency, and accountability. Going forward, the organisation will remain vigilant against potential financial irregularities,” the agency said.
