Cape Town – A suspected robber was killed in a shootout with police after four armed men held up a supermarket in Sabie, Mpumalanga.
The suspects robbed the owner at gunpoint before fleeing on foot.
Police responded quickly, and during the pursuit, a shootout ensued.
“Members of police were somehow alerted about the incident and they quickly responded. It was during this time when the astute members spotted the suspects who were running.
“Members also ran after them and it is reported that the suspects suddenly fired some shots at the police. The members reportedly fired back and one suspect was shot then sustained some injuries, meanwhile another suspect was fatally shot,” police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said.
A 9mm pistol with 11 live rounds was found in the possession of the deceased suspect.
The other two suspects are still at large, and investigations into business robbery, attempted murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm, and an inquest are ongoing.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate is looking into the shooting incident, and the public is urged to provide information for the apprehension of the outstanding suspects.
