Cape Town — A police officer from Mamre was shot and killed after he and his partner responded to a domestic violence complaint in the area.
Initial police reports suggest that the officer, Sergeant Adrian Mahoney (44), along with his partner, were dispatched to attend to a domestic violence complaint at about 12.45pm at Klapmuts Street, IOL reported.
“Upon arrival at the address, the suspect, during a scuffle, allegedly took the service pistol of the police official and fatally shot him. The suspect also opened fire on the partner of the sergeant, whereafter he fled the scene on foot. The partner of the sergeant was not hurt,” police spokesperson, Novela Potelwa, said.
Western Cape provincial commissioner, Lieutenant-General Thembisile Patekile, also expressed his dismay at the killing of a police officer in the line of duty.
“It is disheartening that a police official responding to a complaint is shot with his own service pistol. Police are there to protect community members,” said Patekile.
Rest in Peace, Sergeant Adrian Mahoney.
It was absolutely heartbreaking to hear about yet another slain police member yesterday in Mamre in the Western Cape.

Police Minister, Bheki Cele , revealed that 109 police officers have lost their lives over the past year. While most of the police officers have died off0duty, about 36 police officers were killed during the commission of their policing work, such as confrontation with brutal and armed criminals.
According to SABC News, Western Cape Police Oversight and Community Safety Minister, Reagen Allen, conveyed his condolences to the officer’s family.
“We should not lose our members in this particular manner, those who attack or murder any law enforcement officer should be charged as one who’s attacking the state. As these officers are upholding and enforcing our country’s laws to ensure our citizens are protected, I urge anyone with information on the whereabouts of the suspect to make it available to the SA Police Service.” Allen said.
Reports later suggested that the police tracked down and fatally wounded the suspect early this morning as a team of SAPS cops managed to finally trace the suspect that was still armed with Sergeant Mahoney’s service pistol.
