Bloemfontein – A female sergeant at the Maseru Bridge Port of Entry was arrested on Monday by the Free State Police Anti-Corruption Unit for allegedly accepting a bribe.
The arrest followed an incident on 7 March 2023, where the accused reportedly took an undisclosed amount of money from a taxi driver who was allegedly crossing over to Lesotho with illegal immigrants.
“The taxi driver and four illegal immigrants were arrested on the spot by members from the Border Management Authorities and they are currently in custody after being denied bail,” said police spokesperson Sergeant Mahlomola Kareli.
The 44-year-old sergeant appeared in court and was released on R3 000 bail.
She will appear again in the Ladybrand Magistrates’ court on 21 April, 2023, pending further investigation on charges of corruption, aiding and abetting, and defeating the ends of justice.
