Cape Town – A four-year-old girl, Reitumetse Madibeng, is missing in Dewetsdorp, Free State, after her two cousins, aged 19 and 20, allegedly left her sleeping under a tree by the roadside while on their way to farms.
The cousins have been charged with child neglect.
Lieutenant Colonel Thabo Covane stated that the two women departed from their residence in Kanana, accompanied by the girl, and proceeded towards farms in the R702 road area.
The child got tired, laid down under the tree, and the two women continued walking to a farm.
“It is alleged the two cousins left the four-year-old girl under the tree by the roadside towards Daspoort after the child got tired from walking and laid down under the tree. The two women left the child where she was resting and continued walking to a farm in the area,” Covane said.
Upon reaching their destination, they informed the mother about leaving the child behind, leading to a police search that has yet to locate the missing girl.
“When they arrived at their destination, they informed the mother that they had left the child behind and she immediately called the police. A search team was assembled but could not find the child.”
